Origins: World War I (1917-1918)
The 82nd Division was established on August 25, 1917, at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Originally composed of soldiers from 48 states (hence the nickname All-Americans), the division was initially known as the 82nd Division.
In 1918, during World War I, the division saw action in the Champagne-Marne, Meuse-Argonne, and St. Mihiel offensives.
Birth of the Airborne: World War II (1942-1945)
The 82nd Airborne transformation into an airborne division occurred in 1942, when it was reorganized under Major General William Bull Harrison.
D-Day: Operation Overlord (June 6, 1944)
The 82nd Airborne most famous moment came on D-Day, when over 2,000 paratroopers from the division jumped into Normandy in the pre-dawn hours.
Operation Market Garden (September 1944)
Known as A Bridge Too Far, this ambitious operation saw the 82nd Airborne drop into the Netherlands to secure key bridges.
The Battle of the Bulge (December 1944)
When Germany launched its final major offensive in the Ardennes, the 82nd Airborne was called upon to help stop the German advance.
